Athens, Tenn.- The volleyball team was back in action on Friday in James L. Robb Gymnasium. The team started a two-day, Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) weekend, beginning with the Kentucky Christian University Lady Knights.

After falling behind 2-1, the Lady Bulldogs scored eight of the next nine points to take a 9-3 lead. Kills by Marjorie Smith and two service aces by Jayda Perry played a part in the team moving ahead by six points. The lead was cut to three points a few moments later but a rally of five consecutive points, ending with a Haylie Peoples block solo pushed TWU back ahead 16-8. The team did not let the Lady Knights back into the set and kills by Smith, Aly Grace Lemons and Cierra Williams helped the team win the first set 25-14.

Points from Jenna Huppert, Gabby Harris, and Smith helped the team lead 4-1 in the second set. Kentucky Christian came back to tie the match 4-4, setting in motion close action over the next few points. The visitors held on to the lead in the second set until back-to-back Lemons’ kills along with an Ariana Smith kill helped the Lady Bulldogs lead 17-14. The lead expanded to 20-16 on a Williams service ace and a kill by Harris ended the set with the home team in the lead 25-19, giving them a 2-0 lead in the match.

Feeling the momentum on their side to begin the third set, Tennessee Wesleyan raced out to a 9-5 lead. The team stayed in control of the set, moving the lead to 15-6 on an Olivia Bolin service ace. As kills by Peoples and M. Smith increased the lead for the team, a kill by Madison Coffey gave the team the third set win 25-14, and the match sweep 3-0.

Smith had a double-double (13 kills and 11 digs) while Bolin and Perry both had 16 assists. Williams led with 15…
