West Point, Ga.- The volleyball team concluded their weekend trip on Saturday in West Point, Ga. The team visited the town to face the Point University Lady Skyhawks in Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) action.

Kills by Aly Grace Lemons and Marjorie Smith helped the team battle back to within two points of the lead in the first set with the score 6-4. Back-to-back points by Jenna Huppert and Ariana Smith made the score 10-7 in favor of Point. Holding a five-point advantage, the opponents scored eight of the next 11 points to move ahead 23-13, eventually taking the first set 25-14.

The second set saw the team battle back to tie the score with four consecutive points on two A. Smith kills, a Madison Coffey service ace, and a Huppert kill to take a 9-8 lead. A block solo by Haylie Peoples and Huppert kill moved the team’s lead to 13-10. A 14-14 tie was broken in TWU’s favor, but the set remained close over the next few minutes. The final tie of the set was broken by the opponents, who went on to win the second set 25-20.

Needing a third set win to extend the match, the Lady Bulldogs used a Coffey service ace to tie the set 3-3. Point broke the tie though and moved ahead 7-4. A service ace by M. Smith along with errors by Point helped the team close the gap, making the score 10-8. The team could not pull close as the Lady Skyhawks moved their lead to 16-9. Tennessee Wesleyan made two more runs at turning the lead in their favor, pulling within three points two different times late in the set. The team was not able to outpace the opponents to the magic number, falling 25-17 in the third set and 3-0 in the match.

M. Smith led the team with 10 kills to go along with 12 assists by Jayda Perry. Cierra Williams led with 15 digs for the Lady Bulldogs.

The team returns home for their next match. TWU will host Johnson University, the newcomers to the AAC, on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
