Athens, Tenn.-Â The volleyball team played their first conference game of the 2022 season on Thursday. The team hosted the other Lady Bulldogs of the Appalachian Athletic Conference, Union College, in James L. Robb Gymnasium.
In the first set, TWU scored the first three points, one coming off a block solo by Kamari Jackson. Union came back to tie the score but kills from Jackson and Madison Coffey over the next few points helped the team hold a 7-4 lead. The advantage stayed in the home team’s favor over the next several points, moving ahead 17-10 at one point in the set. Union made an 11-4 run to take over the lead, going on to win the first set 25-22.
The second set saw much of the same action as the first set. A kill by Amya Sutton gave the team a 6-5 advantage but Union soon re-took the lead. Points by Megan Lee and Jackon helped the team move back ahead 11-10. The opponents went on to score eight of the next nine points to move ahead 18-12. The Lady Bulldogs made one more run at the lead, using points from Coffey, a Sydney Allen service ace, Olivia Miller, and Lee to pull within two points of the deficit. Union scored three straight points to take set two by a score of 25-20.
After a kill by Lee and service ace by Coffey put the third set in a 2-2 tie, the offense went cold for the Lady Bulldogs. The visitors went on a scoring rally, taking a 19-9 advantage. The deficit was too much for the team to overcome as Union took the third set 25-15 and the match 3-0.
Miller led the team with seven kills while Allen had a team-high 14 assists. Megan Thompson led with 17 digs.
The loss moved the team’s record to 1-8 overall and 0-1 in the AAC.
