COLLEGE PARK, MD — The Terps (15-16, 6-13) grabbed the first set but ultimately fell 3-1 (25-22, 15-25, 22-25, 28-30) to No. 19 Purdue (20-9, 11-8) in an incredibly hard-fought match on Wednesday evening in the XFINITY Pavilion.
The Terps took advantage of three Boilermaker service errors en route an exciting opening set win in front of the home crowd in the home finale. Laila Ivey was key in the set, stringing together a trio of kills in the back half of the frame to propel the Terps to victory.
Maryland dropped the second set, but Rainelle Jones notched her 700th career block in the frame.
The Boilermakers narrowly grabbed the final two sets, needing a come-from-behind effort and extra points in the final frame, to claim the victory. Purdue had match point multiple times in the fourth frame, but Maryland kept coming up with impressive answers to extend the match to 30 points.
Maryland set a season-high in digs with 83, besting their previous best of 76 against Arizona on Sept. 10. The Terps surpassed 76 before the end of the fourth set.
