Terps Drop Match With Michigan

ANN ARBOR, MI – Maryland volleyball was defeated by Michigan in consecutive sets (21-25, 17-25, 25-21) at Cliff Keen Arenaon on Thursday. The Terps are now 13-15 overall and 4-13 in Big Ten play. 

Despite boasting leads in all three of the sets, Maryland was unable to come away with a set victory in a match of runs. Michigan improved to 17-11 on the season and 7-10 in conference action.  

Sam Csire moved up to third all-time in program history in kills. She recorded nine on the day to increase her total to 1431. The graduate outside hitter passed Adreené Elliott (1,424 from 2011-15) in the match. 

 

Samantha Schnitta tallied six kills, six digs, four blocks and two service aces. She now has 79 aces to lead all NCAA Division I. The total is also a program record. 

Katie Scherer added five kills and six digs. Anastasia Russ rounded out performers with a game-high seven blocks. 

Breaking Down The Action

Set 1:Michigan 25  Maryland 21 

  • Back-to-back kills by Samantha Schnitta and Anastasia Russ gave them an early 3-2 lead. 
  • Michigan pulled ahead with an 8-4 lead after going on a 6-1 run. 
  • The Terps responded by going on a 6-0 run to tie the set at 11 apiece. Sam Csire had three kills in the run. 
  • The Terrapins led by three at 18-15 after a kill by Schnitta.
  • The Wolverines then went on a 6-0 run to take back their lead at 21-18. 
  • Michigan closed out the set with the win recording three consecutive points. 

Set 2:  Michigan 25 Maryland 17 

  • Michigan scored the first two points of the second set, but the Terps responded with six consecutive points to force a timeout.
