ANAHEIM, California — The Southern California Indoor Volleyball Hall of Fame honored its sixth, seventh and eighth induction classes Sunday before a sell-out audience at Anaheim’s Hwy 39 Event Center.
The event, a veritable Who’s Who of volleyball in Southern California, included Olympians, great coaches and more.
A highlight was 91-year-old Alice Sanchez accepting a Lifetime Service award for her 50 years of running club events as well as being a senior player champion.
Other lifetime honors went to former USC All-American setter Bill Stetson, for his work the past 25 years as the USA men’s and women’s team doctor, and San Diego businessman Charlie Jackson, who has supported and worked in the sport from youth to national teams, including coaching.
The 2022 class honored included DaeLea Aldrich, Doug Dannevik, David Lee, Jim McLaughlin, Rick Olmstead, Don Shaw, Rosie Wegrich, and Elaine Youngs.
Honored from 2023 were Cynthia Barboza-Wilkes, Albert Gasparian, the late Ninja Jorgensen (her cousin Svend Anderson flew in from Denmark to accept), Kristin Klein Keefe, Rich Lambourne, Miki McFadden, and the late Mary Perry (her nephew Doug Perry accepted).
The 2024 induction group included Michael Boehle, Linda Chisholm, Matt Fuerbringer, Adam Johnson, Walt Ker, Nancy Owen-Fortner, and Erik Sullivan. NBC Olympics commentator Randy Rosenbloom was the MC and the video tribute was produced by NBC Olympics staff member Tom Feuer.
The Hall made charity donations in the memory of Hall of Fame Lifetime selection Byron Shewman to Starlings Volleyball, USA of San Diego; and to owner Kristina Marina for her club activities at the Forza 1 Performance Center in Temecula where the Hall of Fame is housed. There was also a special presentation to VolleyballMag, which was accepted by editor Lee Feinswog.
The 2025 and 2026 induction classes will tentatively be honored on May 3, 2026 in connection with the NCAA’s National Collegiate Men’s Volleyball Championship at UCLA.
