Three Serve as Volleyball Captains

The 2023 Muhlenberg volleyball team is being captained by one senior and two juniors.

Senior Julia Ficon and juniors Esmae Oehler and Rachel Jacobs were selected to lead the Mules, who are off to a 9-3 start – their best record through 12 matches since 2018. Muhlenberg travels to play defending national champion Juniata this weekend before opening Centennial Conference play next Friday night with a home match against Gettysburg.

Ficon is in her third season as a team captain. The defensive specialist has accumulated career totals of 301 digs, 38 assists and 39 aces. She recorded 12 digs in the Mules’ season-opening win against Marymount and added 8 in the team’s most recent win, a four-setter at Drew. Ficon was named to the Centennial Conference Sportsmanship Team last year.

Oehler is serving as a team captain for the second straight year. She leads all active Muhlenberg players with 525 career kills, recording double figures in kills four times this season. Oehler also has career totals of 351 digs, 42 aces and 28 blocks. She was named to the CC Academic Honor Roll in 2022.

Jacobs currently ranks third on the Mules in kills with 88 and has already surpassed her previous high of 11 in a match twice this season, finishing with 12 against Bluffton and 13 against Drew. She was named to the All-Tournament Team of the Buttermaker Tournament and leads all active Mules with 85 career blocks. Jacobs also has a career total of 307 kills.
