TALLADEGA, Ala. – The Southern States Athletic Conference Match of the Week featured its two historically black colleges and universities, as Stillman College traveled to Talladega College on Friday for their first meeting since 2011. Despite attempts to rally in the last two sets, Stillman fell in three sets, 25-7, 25-18 and 25-16.

Stillman benefited from five Talladega errors for most of its points in the opening set, with Madison Bubel and TiAna Lawrence each recorded late kills.

The Tigers scored an in-conference, single-set high 18 points in the second set. A Lawrence kill and four Talladega errors helped Stillman build a 5-3 lead. Stillman remained in front, 13-12, before Talladega put together a six-point run. After losing its lead, the closest Stillman got was three points, 20-17, before the Tornadoes secured five of the last six points.

Katelynn Madison opened the third set with her first service ace. Stillman posted an early 2-1 lead, but the set quickly tilted to the Tornadoes, which built a 10-5 lead. Sparked by an Aeraeonna Manuel kill and two Manuel service aces, Stillman rallied to close a nine-point gap to 21-16. However, Talladega finished the match with four-straight points, including back-to-back kills from Josephine Gates.

Gates led Dega with 14 kills, an ace and one assisted block. Tianah Sanders scored 10 total points, including a block and nine kills. Kenya Glenn led the defense with 10 digs. Raven Clater and Maloree Calzadillas split the set assists, 16 to 14, respectively.

Stillman (0-7, 0-6 SSAC) will travel to Life University on Saturday for a 1 p.m. EDT match.
