Torres Named SEC Defensive Player of the Week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After holding down the back row against in a five-set thriller at No. 20 Florida, Tennessee’s Yelianiz Torres earned SEC Defensive Player of the Week honors for the second straight week, the league office announced Monday.

A graduate student libero from Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, Torres helped mitigate the Gator’s hot offense, as the Lady Vols earned their first win in Gainesville since 2012. She finished with a team-high 21 digs—11 of which came during the fourth and fifth sets when UT rallied from behind against the Gators. Her 4.20 digs per set ranked fourth in the SEC for the week.

This marked the third time this season that Torres received defensive player of the week recognition. For the year, she’s averaging 4.09 digs per set, which ranks fourth in the SEC. During league play, that number goes up to 4.60 digs per set, moving her to second among conference players.

As a team, Tennessee’s had four different players win a combined 17 SEC weekly honors this season.

The 10th-ranked Lady Vols return to Food City Center for a pair of home matches this week against Georgia and Ole Miss. UT opens with a Friday night contest against the Bulldogs at 6:30 before taking on the Rebels for a 2 p.m. matchup on Sunday. Both matchups will be streamed on SEC Network+.
