Caffo, Donley, Young-Gomez Honored
BERKELEY – Three members of the California beach volleyball team earned a handful of postseason awards Wednesday ahead of the NCAA Championship.
Sierra Caffo was named to the All-Pac-12 first team, Alexandria Young-Gomez was named to the second team, and Emma Donley was named to the second team and the all-freshman team. Caffo and Young-Gomez were also named AVCA Second Team All-Americans.
This is the second straight year that Caffo took home the same pair of honors and did so by occupying the Golden Bears’ top spot for most of the season. The senior captain has 13 wins on court one for Cal with 10 of those victories coming over ranked opponents. In early April, she and Young-Gomez took down the number one pair in the country, USC’s Delaynie Maple and Megan Kraft. She also picked up wins over No. 4 Florida State, No. 7 Cal Poly, and No. 8 LSU.
Young-Gomez picked up her first career postseason honors by becoming a mainstay on court one with Caffo during the second half of the season. The junior boasts a 12-4 record in the top spot and ranks second on the team with 23 wins this season. This past week she reached a career milestone picking up her 60th career win in the first round of the Pac-12 Championship and is just two wins away from breaking into the program’s top-10 list.
As a true freshman, Donley came to Cal and made an immediate impact this season, tallying 20 total wins thus far. A force at the net with the athleticism to pass and set, Donley has played on the top two courts virtually the entire season. She holds a 7-1 record on court one and is an even 12-12 on court two after picking up a pair of wins in her first Pac-12 Championship last weekend.
