STANFORD, Calif. – Four Cardinal registered double-digit kills but it wasn’t enough as No. 5 Stanford fell 22-25, 22-25, 25-20, 21-25 to No. 7 UC Irvine, Saturday, at Maples Pavilion.
UC Irvine (8-4) hit .343 for the match while holding Stanford (7-5) to a .254 clip. The Cardinal out blocked the Anteaters, 12.0 to 9.5 – its third-most blocks in a match this season. UCI held a 51-45 advantage in digs and a 2-1 edge in aces.
Sophomore Alex Rottman led the team with 15 kills, matching his career-high. The outside hitter also tallied a career-high five blocks, five digs and the lone Cardinal ace.
For the match, there were 22 tie scores and nine lead changes. The Cardinal led wire-to-wire in the third.

Middle blocker Nathaniel Gates hit .500 with a season-high 11 kills on 20 swings with just one miscue. The fifth-year also tied his career-best with six digs and had a match-high seven blocks.
Setter Nathan Lietzke tallied 46 assists, six digs, three kills and three blocks. Libero Luke Turner collected a team-high 10 digs and four assists.
