UCLA to Face Arizona Schools


LOS ANGELES – The UCLA women’s volleyball team embarks on its first Pac-12 road trip after two weeks at home to face Arizona State on Friday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. PT in Desert Financial Arena and Arizona on Sunday, Oct. 9 at noon in the McKale Center. The Bruins (6-7, 0-4) look to end a five-game skid with help from leading point scorers Charitie Luper (3.47 PPS) and élan McCall (3.40 PPS). Friday will mark the Sun Devils’ (8-8, 2-2) first home contest since Aug. 27 in the first week of the season.

Weekend Recap

UCLA dropped to 0-4 in Pac-12 play after a pair of four-set losses to Utah and Colorado last week. Iman Ndiaye closed the weekend with a career-high 22 kills at .421. It was the first 20-kill performance by a Bruin this season. Charitie Luper took her most swings in a single match so far this season with 49 attempts against Utah and finishing with a double-double (10 K, 13 D). Libero Mackenzie Cole recorded her highest dig performance so far as a Bruins with 26 digs versus Colorado.

 

Noting the Bruins

• The Bruins are on a five-match losing streak for their longest streak since 2013 when it opened the Pac-12 schedule with losses to USC, Colorado, Stanford, California and USC.

• The Bruins are hitting .203 as a team and holding their opponents to .182.

• UCLA ranks 13th in the country and third in the conference in blocks per set at 2.68.

• Middle blocker Francesca Alupei is averaging a 1.50 blocks per set, good for eighth-best in the country and second in the Pac-12.

• Alupei has had the two highest block outputs of her career so far in the early season, with nine total roofs against Hawai’i on Sept. 4 and another nine against San Diego State on Sept. 15.

• Alupei has recorded seven 5+ block outings so far this season, including back-to-back performances last weekend.

Charitie Luper leads the Bruins with 3.00 kills per set in her five matches played this season. Behind her is élan McCall at 2.85 KPS, who has appeared in every set this season for UCLA.
