Women’s Beach Volleyball | July 13, 2023
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The six-time national champion USC beach volleyball team received the 2022-23 USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award for the fourth straight year, as announced by the American Volleyball Coaches Association on Thursday, July 13.
Presented by the United States Marine Corps in collaboration with the AVCA, the Women of Troy were part of a record-setting 1,333 collegiate and high school volleyball teams chosen for the honor. The award, initiated in the 1992–93 academic year, honors volleyball teams that maintain a year-long grade-point average of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale or 4.1 on a 5.0 scale.
“The commitment our coaches make to help their student-athletes pursue the best versions of themselves is evident in the academic accomplishments highlighted today.” said AVCA CEO Jaime Gordon. “Achievement on the court has always been closely tied to success in the classroom which is reflected by the number of championship programs honored.”
For the second consecutive year, women’s collegiate beach set a new record with 66 teams receiving the honor this season. Of the nine teams that received the academic award and won their particular collegiate national championship, USC was the only NCAA Division I program to accomplish both this season.
Under fourth-year head coach Dain Blanton, the USC beach volleyball team captured its third straight NCAA Championship (fifth NCAA title and sixth national title) in 2023. The Women of Troy finished the year ranked No. 1 and had an overall record of 32-5. USC added two more AVCA All-Americans to its history books with the third selection for Megan Kraft and the first-career honor for Delaynie Maple. Kraft was named the Pac-12’s Player of the Year while she and Maple earned Pac-12 Pair of the Year laurels. Both were named to the Pac-12 All-Conference Team and were joined by Madison Shields and Madison White. Blanton finished his fourth season with a 105-15 career record and Gustavo Rocha was chosen as the AVCA National Assistant Coach of the Year.
