USI VB travels to UT Martin on Tuesday night


MARTIN, Tenn.- University of Southern Indiana Volleyball travels to University of Tennessee at Martin for the second leg of the Ohio Valley Conference series between the squads on Tuesday night at 6 p.m. The Screaming Eagles look to avenge their five-set loss to the Skyhawks at home on October 1.

USI HEADLINES

Struggles against WIU at Home. The Eagles were swept twice this past weekend at home against a surging Leathernecks squad dropping to 3-6 in OVC play. The Eagles had an ample amount of opportunities to swing the match in their favor on Friday with two set point opportunities, before falling 30-32. In set two, USI led 17-11 but failed to finish the Leathernecks allowing them to make a 14-5 run. In set three, WIU broke it open with a 25-14 match clinching set. Saturday’s match was similar as the Eagles fell in three sets (23-25, 21-25, 18-25). 

Moore Holding it Down. While the Eagles have been struggling, junior Keira Moore has seen an ample amount of attacks from the back row lately as USI’s libero. The junior has tallied 15+ dig matches in eight straight, averaging 20.63 digs per match. She has also distributed 36 assists in OVC play, along with 11 service aces. 

Feeding Willis. Sophomore Ashby Willis has become the target hitter who brings consistency into every match along with the ability to take over in clutch scenarios racking up double-digit kills in eight-straight matches. Willis tied her career high of 19 kills at Eastern Illinois University dating back to her days at Purdue University Fort Wayne. This past weekend, she totaled 14 kills in both matches on a .314 hitting percentage, along with eclipsing a new career high in digs at 24 in only three sets. The outside hitter has delivered eight double-digit dig matches in nine OVC opportunities. 

Set Trends. The Eagles are now 5-16 in first sets, 11-10 in second sets, 8-13 in third sets, 7-5 in fourth sets, and 2-2 in fifth sets. USI’s struggle this season has been getting ahead, losing 16 of 21 first sets. Opponents have outscored the Eagles by 73 (519-446) in…
