Colombo, Sri Lanka, October 12, 2024 – The CAVA Men’s U20 Volleyball Championship at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium concluded on Saturday in a thrilling display of talent, determination and sportsmanship, with Uzbekistan emerging as the undisputed champions.
The seven-day competition in Colombo, the capital city Sri Lanka, brought together the best young volleyball talents from across Central Asia, culminating in the final day filled with intense matches and unforgettable moments.
In the championship match, Uzbekistan, the only unbeaten team in the tournament, showcased their dominance by defeating Nepal 3-1 (25-27, 25-10, 25-16, 25-20) to capture the eventual title with remarkable unbeaten record.
Despite an early setback, Uzbekistan rallied to claim the victory, thanks to the stellar performance of Ogabek Haydarov, who led his team with a match-high 21 points from 19 attacks and two blocks. Nepal’s Sagar Rasouli also shined, scoring 15 points, all in attack, in a valiant effort, but it wasn’t enough to hold back the formidable visitors.
In the bronze medal match earlier, Turkmenistan bounced back from losing the first two sets to beat Kyrgyzstan in epic tie-breaker 23-25, 23-25, 25-20, 25-23, 15-13) in an exhausting two-hour battle.
The result marked a significant achievement for Turkmenistan’s young players, setting a promising tone for the future of volleyball in the country.
Alisher Narbayev chipped in 17 points from 11 attacks and 6 blocks for Turkmenistan, while Temirlan Temirbekov tallied 20 points including 15 attacks from 38 attempts for Kyrgyzstan.
In the classification 5th-6th places, hosts Sri Lanka wrapped up their campaign with a convincing 3-0 (25-12, 25-20, 25-20) victory against Maldives, to secure the fifth place.
The home crowd witnessed a spirited performance as the team demonstrated their potential in this competitive tournament.
The closing ceremony was a grand affair, with CAVA President Mr Mohamed Latheef from Maldives, himself AVC Executive Vice President and AVC Zonal Executive Vice President representing Central Zone, and Mr Nalaka, President of the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation and CAVA Secretary General, jointly presiding.
Both dignitaries congratulated the teams on their outstanding performance and acknowledged the growing level of talent and passion.
