VIETNAM CONTINUE UNBEATEN RUN WITH STRAIGHT-SET WIN ON IRAN

Gresik, East Java, Indonesia, June 21, 2023 – Vietnam cruised into a 3-0 match (25-10, 25-9, 25-18) against Iran to cop their third straight victory in the 2023 AVC Challenge Cup for Women.

Head coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet banked on his usual starters in the Pool F match-up on Wednesday in East Java’s Tri Dharma Petrokimia Gresik Gymnasium, which displayed Vietnam’s dominance in nearly all fields. They scored with 46 attacks, 7 blocks and 5 service winners.

Captain Tran Thi Thanh Thuy delivered keyed 12 points in Vietnam’s sweep of Iran.

The winning team mostly succeeded in running their system, as they could consistently run their plays on Tran Thi Thanh Thuy. Their passing and setting were almost always on point, that their captain could position well for picture-perfect attacks. When they needed to play transition, they likewise delivered well, opening up opportunities for equally effective hitters such as Hoang Thi Kieu Trinh and Tran Tu Linh, scoring 9 points and 8 points respectively.

Iran showed that they could run their plays with similar picture-perfect quality, but they mostly lagged in their passing patterns. They had tall and reliable hitters that could pack power into their attacks, but they were not quick nor fluid enough in the passing lanes.

With this, Vietnam tried to impose pressure and strategy in their service, in order to throw off the opponents’ rhythm.

Iran tried to spark a run in the third set, but Vietnam surged forth with momentum on their side for their third consecutive win in the competition.

“It is always a good and happy feeling to win one match after another. We want to use this confidence when we play our other matches here,” said Nguyen Thi Trinh, who contributed another 7 markers in the victory.

Vietnam will capitalize on this momentum against Chinese Taipei to dispute the top position in Pool F on June 23, Friday, at 14:00 local time.

“We know they are a strong team, as we have seen them in many AVC competitions. We will try to do our best to win against a good team as theirs,” added Nguyen Thi Trinh.

Meanwhile, Iran will look to win against Uzbekistan for a better stake at the rankings during the earlier match at 08:30 local time.
