VIETNAM PUNCH IN THIRD WIN AFTER 3-1 MATCH ON KAZAKHSTAN

Manila, Philippines, May 24, 2024 – Vietnam collect another victory after a 3-1 match (25-14, 25-19, 14-25, 25-23 ) against Kazakhstan in Pool B of the 2024 AVC Challenge Cup for Women.

In Friday’s second match at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum, Nguyen Thi Bich Tuyen boosted the titleholders’ third win as she exploded with 30 points.

Vietnam played within their known system, showing good backcourt movement to soundly orchestrate the offense. Their passing unit performed well, allowing the hitters to prepare well for their attacks. Nguyen Thi Bich Tuyen and Hoang Thi Kieu Trinh operated at the flanks with much success. Their composure in transition also allowed for control at the middle, activating the quick attacks of Nguyen Thi Trinh.

Kazakhstan struggled to find their rhythm in the match, as they found challenge in the passing lanes. Historically, they could prove effective in block defense, but their opponents were equally effective in deflection. They settled into a sizeable lead in the third set, as triggered by Zhanna Syroyeshkina’s service run. They also set up captain Sana Anarkulova from the wing, who delivered her swings with much precision and punctuation.

The Kazakh side tried to play along in the fourth set, as coach Rishat Gilyazutdinov signalled a change of setters in several sequences. This brought the CAVA side to tie at 20-20 after trailing behind during the set.

Vietnam recovered their momentum, which was boosted further by opponent errors, to help towards their third win as many matches in the competition.

Captain Tran Thi Thanh Thuy was happy to get another win for the team, even as she watched from the sidelines.

“It’s been a long time since we last played against Kazakhstan, maybe six years ago. We know that they are strong,  tall and can play well so we felt a little bit intimidated and confused at times.

“I am confident that we will get good results in this competition, and will hope to get the championship. All the players are working hard and we have a good connection in the team. When we have these, it will be possible to get good results,” she said.

It will be a rematch of the 2023 finale as Vietnam faces Indonesia in Sunday’s opening match at 10:00. Meanwhile, Kazakhstan will meet Indonesia on Saturday at 13:00. All times local.
