Vikings End Losing Skid, Beating Mustangs in 5 Sets

Cedar Rapids, IA – The No. 4 ranked Vikings traveled to Cedar Rapids, IA in hopes of redemption for their latest losing skid. The Vikings who are battling illness and injuries prevailed through adversity to win in five sets over the Mustangs with scores of, 25-16, 25-19, 25-20, 25-22, and 15-9. 

Set 1: Grand View University 16 l Mount Mercy University 25

The Vikings started the first set off with some costly errors. These errors would decide the set early, and it would be a theme throughout the first set. A kill by Nickolas Lima (FR/Curitiba, Brazil ) assisted by Zeo Meyer (JR/Wheaton, IL ) would help get the Vikings back on track and trailing 8-5. Multiple attack errors would put the first set out of reach anytime the Vikings would get some momentum going. Daniel Wong (SR/Campbell, CA ) would get a kill, and make the score 22-14 in favor of the Mustangs, and an error would end the set for the Vikings, and the Mustangs would hold the 1-0 advantage. 

Set 2: Grand View University 25 l Mount Mercy University 19 

In the second set, Grand View would get a hot start from Bayron Valdez (JR/Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) who would open things up with back-to-back kills, evening things at 2-2. Zeo Meyer would add to the hot start with an ace, giving the Vikings their first lead of the contest, 4-2. The second set would be all Zeo Meyer, Bayron Valdez, and Danny Wong. Valdez’s unstoppable run would gather 3 straight kills and would give the Vikings a 19-15 lead. Meyer would end this set in favor of the Vikings with a kill of his own assisted by Dalton Dencklau (SR/Lehigh, IA ), 25-19. 

Set 3: Grand View University 25 l Mount Mercy University 20

The Vikings would seem to have a rhythm going by the 3rd set, and it would show in the opening serve with a kill from Brendan Edington. Nickolas Lima would get an ace, putting the Vikings up 10-1. Daniel Wong would finish the third set strong as he would go for a kill, and his teammate Bayron Valdez would grab back-to-back kills, and Wong would apply the finisher with an ace, 25-20. 

Set 4: Grand View University 22 l Mount Mercy University 25

The Mustangs would fall behind the Vikings in the fourth set, giving all Viking fans hope that this would be the finishing set and bounce-back win for the Vikings. A strong start would be ushered by Dalton Dencklau with an ace, and an assist to teammate Daniel Wong for the kill and…
