Columbia, MO – The Grand View women’s volleyball team suffered its first loss of the season at the Hampton Inn Classic to the host school, Columbia College, in three sets, 20-25, 18-25, and 15-25.
Set 1: Grand View University 20 l Columbia College 25
The Vikings were able to get the match started on a high note as they jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the early goings. The Cougars started rocky with an attacking error on the Vikings. Chevy Wagner-Chun (JR/Waianae, HI) capitilzied on the momentum by throwing up back to back aces, for a match high of 3. Grand View held the lead most of the first ste until the last few serves of the first set, where Columbia went on a run to seal the fate of the first round.
Set 2: Grand View University 18 l Columbia College 25
In set two, Grand View saw errors begin to weigh, and Columbia jumped out to a 2-5 lead. Ellie Dougherty (FR/Omaha, NE) made her mark early in the second set with a huge mometum swinging kill with an assist from Alesha Johnson (JR/ Council Bluffs, IA). The Vikings would then cut the Cougars lead to 1 point after a kill by Johnson, making the score 7-8, the closest difference in the set.
Set 3: Grand View University 15 l Columbia College 25
Another freshman made her stamp early and often in the third set. Chloe McDermott (FR/ Yankton, SD) put the Vikings on the board, recording an early kill making the set neck-and-neck for a majority. Columbia was on a run in the third set, when Taylor Carey (SR/ Waukee, IA) had a huge block assisted by McDermott to halt the streak. Unfortunatley, the Vikings couldnt find enough to stop the Cougars while they were hitting at an impressive .243% throughout the match.
Key Players…
Offensively, two Vikings tallied six kills. Chloe McDermott led with 6 at a precentage of .600, and Ellie Dougherty also had 6. Next in line for kills was Sydney Beasley (SO/ Darlington, WI) with 4, and Emily Box added 3. Alesha Johnson added an impressive 19 assists to 25 kills. Defensively, Chevy Wagner-Chun was on the mark with 16 recorded digs.

The Vikings will compete against No. 15 Indiana Wesleyan at 4:00 PM back in Columbia who had just upset the No.3 team in the nation Bellevue prior to their match.
