St. Louis, MO – The No. 1 ranked Grand View men’s volleyball team saw its winning streak come to an end on Saturday afternoon. The Vikings fell to No. 11 Missouri Baptist in four sets by scores of 23-25, 25-22, 18-25 and 20-25.
Set 1: Grand View University 23 l Missouri Baptist University 25
Grand View began the first on a good note and grabbed a 9-6 advantage after capitalizing on some errors by Missouri Baptist. The momentum turned, however, when the Spartans tied the match at 13-13 due to a 4-0 scoring run. A couple of points later, Missouri Baptist took the lead at 17-19. The Vikings made a valiant effort at a comeback and cut the deficit down to one at 23-24, but Missouri Baptist won the next point on an attack error to claim the set.
Set 2: Grand View University 25 l Missouri Baptist University 22
In the second, Grand View jumped out to another early lead after Daniel Galili (FR/Shomrat, Israel) capped off a 4-0 scoring streak to put the score at 7-4. Through the middle stages, the Vikings and Spartans would trade scores, but the Vikings were able to maintain their four-point advantage when Bayron Valdez (SO/Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) scored a kill at the 18-14 mark. Missouri Baptist eventually got it to a two-point game, but Grand View won the set off a kill by Daniel Wong (SO/Campbell, CA).
Set 3: Grand View University 18 l Missouri Baptist University 25
The beginning of the third set was a different story than the first two for Grand View as it fell behind, 3-7. Leonardo Annichini (SO/Verona, Italy) got the Vikings to within two on a kill at the 8-10 point, but then the Spartans went on a big 7-0 run which made the score 8-17. The deficit was ultimately too much to overcome for the Vikings and they dropped the set to go down two matches to one.
Set 4: Grand View University 20 l Missouri Baptist University 25
The fourth set started out with the Vikings and Spartans coming to an even draw at 8-8. Missouri Baptist found some momentum after it won a couple of consecutive points and went out in front, 13-17. The defining moment of the set came when the Spartans went a three-point run to claim a six-point advantage at 16-22. In the end, Missouri Baptist took the set and the match.
