Virginia Tech earns 2023 USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award


The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced Thursday that the Virginia Tech volleyball team earned the USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2022-23 season. This is the fifth straight season, and the third straight season under head coach Marci Byers, that Tech has received the award by the AVCA. 
 
The award, which was started in 1992-1993, honors teams that average a GPA of 3.30 or higher for the academic year. This past season, 1,333 collegiate and high school teams earned the USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award, marking an all-time record number of programs honored for their academic achievements

Following the 2022 season, ten Hokies were named to the 2022 Volleyball All-ACC Academic Team,. Hanna BorerElayna DupreyAva FrancisLogan MosleyMara PerrySydney PetersenBrie PostemaCera PowellMaddie Slagle and Anabel Zier put in the work on the court and in the classroom. That was the largest group of Hokies to make the All-ACC Academic Team under Marci Byers and in the ACC era.

 

Tech earned a 3.58 Fall 2022 GPA, the third-highest team GPA for the fall across Tech’s 20 varsity sports. Powell, Mosley and Zier were also named Academic All-District by College Sports Communicators, recognizing the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined academic and athletic performances. The three Hokies were recognized for having a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher.

 

The AVCA team award is the latest honor in an impressive run of academic achievements for the Hokies.
