CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced that the Virginia volleyball program was a recipient of the organization’s Team Academic Award on Wednesday (July 17).
Wednesday’s announcement marks the Cavaliers’ fourth award in program history and second consecutive under head coach Shannon Wells, who is entering her fourth season as UVA head coach this fall. Virginia earned its first AVCA Team Academic Award in 2004.
The award, which was initiated during the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale (or 4.10 cumulative GPA on a 5.0 scale).
“We are pleased that the record-setting success of the 2023-24 season on the court has extended to the classroom, too, as evidenced by more programs earning the AVCA Team Academic Award than ever before,” says AVCA CEO Dr. Jaime Gordon. “This is a great example of how committed our coaches are when it comes to helping their players reach their full potential as both students and athletes.”
Eleven UVA volleyball players were previously named to the 2023 All-ACC Academic Team and 13 student-athletes were named ACC Academic Honor Roll recipients.
