The Muhlenberg volleyball team opened the 2024 season with three matches at the Pacific Coast Classic in California.

Despite dropping all three matches, the Mules played some close sets.

In the first match against Pomona-Pitzer, Muhlenberg came out on fire, jumping out to a 7-3 lead. The Mules led 19-16 after junior Christina Marcin served two aces in a span of three points, but the Sagehens reeled off the next nine points to close out the set en route to a 3-0 sweep.

Muhlenberg started strong against Occidental as well, serving six aces – three consecutive by sophomore Jenny Ryan, two by Marcin and one by freshman Olivia Bruno – in winning the first set, 25-10. After Occidental took the second set, the third and fourth both came down to the wire. The Tigers won the final two points of the third set and the final three of the fourth, winning both 26-24.

The Mules’ third match started with yet another tight set, with Chapman scoring the final two points to win, 25-23. Chapman broke away late to take the second set and went on to sweep.

Senior Rachel Jacobs (pictured above) led Muhlenberg with 25 kills, a .221 hitting percentage and 9 blocks in the three matches. She hit double figures with 10 kills against both Occidental and Chapman. Senior Esmae Oehler recorded 14 kills in the Occidental match.

Marcin recorded 22 kills and paced the Mules with 24 digs, narrowly missing a double-double with 9 kills and 10 digs vs. Occidental. She and Ryan both served 7 aces.

Bruno had a strong opening weekend of her collegiate career, totaling 10 kills and 7 blocks.
