Volleyball Completes Weekend Sweep With Two Saturday Wins

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The Union College women’s volleyball team finished off a weekend sweep by defeating Mount Saint Mary College by a 3-0 score and SUNY New Paltz by a 3-1 margin on Saturday afternoon at the Hawks Invitational, hosted by New Paltz at the Hawk Center.
 
Junior Shannon McGrath led the team with 20 kills in the two matches, followed by first-year Georgia Pinciaro with 12. Classmate Georgia Pool recorded 36 digs in the seven sets and her six service aces ranked second on the team behind sophomore Shelby McKim’s 12. First-year Allie Kronenberg dished out a team-leading 33 assists on the day in addition to 17 digs and five kills.
 
Union 3, Mount St. Mary 0 (25-12, 25-8, 25-10)
 
Union made quick work of Mount St. Mary in the first match of the day, needing just over an hour for the straight-set win. McGrath paced the team with eight kills as nine different players recorded at least one kill, while Pool led all players with 19 digs and five service aces. First-year Adrienne Long hit .714 with five kills on seven errorless swings and sophomore Erin Stevens put down five of her nine attacks as well.
 
The Garnet Chargers hit better as the match went on, posting a .115 percentage in the first set, a .286 effort in the second stanza and .370 hitting in the final frame. Union used a massive 14-2 run to break open a close first set and take an early lead, and then scored 12 of the second set’s first 14 points to take quick control of the middle frame.
