LARAMIE, Wyo. (December 5, 2024) – Washington State Volleyball’s 2024 season came to an end Thursday evening with a 3-0 loss to Utah Valley in the opening round of the National Invitational Volleyball Championship.

The Cougars (16-12, 11-7 WCC) hit at a clip of .210 and tallied three blocks against the Wolverines.

Taryn Vrieling and Sage Brustad each led the offense with eight kills while Vrieling added an assist and five digs, and Brustad had an ace and an assist.

Katy Ryan concluded her Cougar career with seven kills on the night.

Breccan Scheck tallied five kills and had a solo block while Lucie Blažková finished with two kills, two solo blocks and four digs.

Weronika Wojdyla racked up three kills and Jaden Walz had one kill to go with her 13 assists and three digs.

Emma Barbero added nine digs and two assists, and Italia Bernal had 16 assists and four digs.

Teams traded points throughout set one as early kills from Vrieling, Scheck and Brustad kept WSU within one, 4-3. UVU went on to lead by as many as four, but a quick 5-2 spurt from WSU behind a Blažková solo block and kills from Brustad and Wojdyla brought it back to a one-point game, 13-12. Kills from Brustad and Scheck down the stretch kept the Cougs within striking distance, but UVU went on to win set one, 25-22.

After Utah Valley won set two, set three opened with teams trading blows, and three early kills from Vrieling along with kills from Brustad and Scheck had the score locked at 8-all in the early goings. The Wolverines would go on a 9-2 scoring run from there, though, to take a 17-10 advantage. WSU chipped away with kills from Brustad and Wojdyla, drawing back to as close as four points with kills from Ryan and Vrieling, but it would be too late as UVU went on to win set three, 25-20, and the match, 3-0.
