Seattle, Wash. (September 13, 2024) – Washington State volleyball took on rival Washington Friday night in Seattle, and despite some strong performances, fell 3-1.
The Cougars (3-3, 0-0 WCC) had two in double-digit kills and two who hit .280 or better on the night over the four-set match (15-25, 25-21, 16-25, 13-25).
Sage Brustad recorded a double-double with a team-leading 13 kills and 11 digs to go with a pair of blocks.
Katy Ryan also reached double-figure kills with 10 while hitting .280 on the night with five total blocks.
Lucie Blažková continued to raise her team-best hitting percentage with a .312 performance on Friday with six kills along with three blocks.
Italia Bernal recorded 28 assists to go with a block and a kill.
Taryn Vrieling finished with five points behind two kills and three service aces, and Breccan Scheck tallied four total blocks and a kill.
After falling in set one, the Cougs took an early 4-3 lead in set two. As the score went back-and-forth, a pair of kills from Vrieling and Scheck brought the set to its sixth tie, 10-10. Kills from Ryan, Blažková and Brustad kept the set within a point until a block from Ryan and Scheck put the Cougs on top 17-16. A service ace from Bernal and a UW attack error capped a 5-0 scoring run for WSU, stretching the lead to 19-16, before a Vrieling ace and kills from Brustad sealed the 25-21 set two win.
