Volleyball Drops First Liberty League Match to #20 Ithaca

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Union College women’s volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-18) match to AVCA #20 Ithaca College in Liberty League action on Friday night at Ben Light Gymnasium.
 
Junior Shannon McGrath led Union (12-5, 1-1 Liberty League) with six kills, followed by first-year Allie Kronenberg with five kills along with eight assists and three digs. Sophomore Erin Stevens also put down five kills and classmate Sydney Scanlon led the squad with 15 assists, while junior Georgia Pool recorded a team-best 11 digs.
 
Ithaca (13-3, 3-0 Liberty League) was paced by Faith Sabatier with a match-high 14 kills and Gabriela Gonzalez-Abreu with 12 kills and nine digs.
 
The Garnet Chargers did not commit an error in the opening set, putting down 11 kills on 29 attempts for .379 hitting, but the team was no match for an Ithaca side that put down 21 kills on 43 attempts for a .442 hitting percentage. Union cooled down at the net in the second set, as the Bombers jumped out to an early 10-3 lead. The visitors got back within four at 19-15, but Ithaca scored five straight points to reassert control and finish off the middle frame.
 
The home team started the third stanza on a 14-6 run on the way to completing the sweep. The Garnet Chargers got back within four at 16-12 and eventually closed the deficit to three after a Stevens block made the score 21-18, but four straight Ithaca points finished off the match.
 
Union will look to rebound tomorrow with another big conference matchup at Rochester Institute of Technology beginning at 2 p.m.
