PULLMAN, Wash. (November 29, 2024) – Washington State Volleyball took on LMU Friday afternoon, falling in four sets to the WCC Champion Lions.

The Cougars (16-11, 11-7 WCC) totaled 12 blocks as a team and hit at a .452 clip in the first set.

Katy Ryan led the team with 14 kills to go with seven blocks, and Sage Brustad ended with 10 kills, 10 digs, an ace and a block.

Taryn Vrieling put up seven kills, two aces, two blocks and 11 digs.

Breccan Scheck led the team with eight blocks and five kills, while Lucie Blažková totaled five kills, four blocks, and two aces.

Weronika Wojdyla added two blocks and a kill, while Haumea Marumoto put up two kills on the day.

An early 5-0 run that saw kills from Ryan and a Vrieling ace put WSU ahead 5-2 before kills from Brustad and Blažková extended its lead to 10-6. A couple of Vrieling kills and a block assist from Vrieling and Scheck pushed the lead to 14-7, and then back-to-back Scheck kills and one each from Brustad and Ryan made it 20-13. A block assist from Blažková and Wojdyla led to back-to-back kills from Vrieling to seal the set one win, 25-20.

LMU worked ahead to open set two, but a 4-0 spurt with a pair of kills each from Brustad and Ryan kept it a one-point set early. While the Lions continued to hold the edge, blocks from Scheck and Ryan and kills from Brustad and Ryan kept WSU in striking distance, 16-14. LMU pulled away down the stretch, though, to win set two, 25-19.

The Cougars battled again in set three, and despite a late 5-1 rally with kills from Scheck and Marumoto, fell 25-20. Then in set four, another late spurt saw a pair of service aces by Blažková as LMU went on to win the set 25-17 and the match, 3-1.
