Volleyball Falls to Indiana in Five Set Thriller

Wisconsin

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Michigan State volleyball was defeated on the road in five sets on Sunday, Oct. 16, falling 3-2 to Indiana (25-21, 23-25, 25-27, 25-23, 10-15) at Wilkinson Hall. The Spartans fought to cut an eight-point deficit in set five to just three, but Indiana hung on to claim victory.

The Spartans out-hit the Hoosiers .227 to .214 overall and held an advantage in digs, 89-88. The Spartans match-best .323 hitting in set one and the team’s .312 performance in set four were the only two .300+ hitting performances by either side in an individual set.

Freshman Nil Okur led the team in kills (13) and blocks (5) while hitting .400. Okur was joined by fellow freshman and countrymate, Selin Aslayan, in double figures with a season-best 12 kills. Returning to the lineup for the first time since Sep. 9, fifth year Rebecka Poljan finished with 11 kills. Junior Nalani Iosia and fifth year Zoe Nunez tied for the Spartan high in digs with 16, while Nunez tallied her second double-double of the season with a match-high 47 assists.

Michigan State took set one despite Indiana coming out of the gates hot. The Hoosiers held an early 5-1 lead over the Spartans but a 6-2 MSU run tied the set at 11-11. MSU took its first lead of the set, 14-13, on a Poljan kill and later led the set by as many as five points. A block by Okur and Aslayan put the Spartans up 22-17 and forced a Hoosier timeout. Indiana went on a 3-0 run out of the break to cut the lead to 22-20, but a pair of kills by Okur and a Hoosier attacking error ended the set in favor of MSU.
