Volleyball Finishes Season with 3-0 Sweep of Plattsburgh

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Union College women’s volleyball team finished off the 2023 season with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-13) victory over Plattsburgh State University in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Hall.

First-year Maddie McCarron hit .476 with 12 kills on 21 attempts to lead Union (13-13), followed by senior Keara Page with 11 kills in her final collegiate match. Sophomore Georgia Pool added a match-high 18 digs and four service aces, and senior Brooke Fleming finished her career with a double-double of 13 assists and 10 digs.

Also playing in their final matches, Nikki Newcomer put down six kills, Caroline Fraser had three kills and a block, and Meredith Blinn chipped in nine digs.

McCarron and sophomore Shannon McGrath led the Garnet Chargers with four kills each in the opening set, as Union put down 17 kills as a team. The visitors scored six of the match’s first seven points to take an early lead, but Plattsburgh (12-12) battled back to knot the score at 13. However, Union went on a 12-5 run the rest of the way, with McCarron leading the charge with three kills to help take the opening set.

Page put down a team-leading five kills in the second stanza, as the visitors fended off the Cardinals to take a two-set lead. Plattsburgh opened up an early lead in the frame and built up a 10-6 advantage before the Garnet Chargers scored nine of the next 12 points to take a 15-12 lead. Although PSU battled back to tie the score at 21, back-to-back kills from McCarron and Page and a block on set point gave Union the middle frame.

Two kills each from Page and McCarron helped Union roll out to an 9-0 lead to start the third set, and the visitors were never challenged from there. Plattsburgh never got closer than four the rest of the way, and Pool closed out the match and the season with an ace.

As a team, Union hit .200 with 41 kills and 16 errors on 125 attacks. Plattsburgh was limited to just 26 kills and 19 errors on 111 attempts (.063).
