Volleyball hosts home opener Thursday as part of three-day Cougar Challenge


PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State volleyball (2-1) will host its annual Cougar Challenge non-conference tournament this Thursday through Saturday in Bohler Gym.  The Cougs will host their home opener Thursday night against Cal. Baptist at 6 p.m., followed by a pair of Friday matches against Belmont and CSU Bakersfield starting at 12:30 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively.

WSU is coming off of a 2-1 start to the season after its trip to the BYU doTERRA Classic in Provo, Utah, last weekend.  Pia Timmer and Magda Jehlarova were each named to the BYU doTERRA Classic all-tournament team.  Timmer averaged 3.20 k/s over the weekend while Jehlarova moved into eighth all-time in WSU history in career block assists (349) after averaging 1.2 blk/s last week.

>> Washington State’s sweep over Rider last weekend in Provo was the 300th-career win for Head Coach Jen Greeny.  The reigning Pac-12 Co-Coach of the Year, Greeny has led WSU volleyball to 20 or more wins in three of the last four years.

>> Under the direction of coach Greeny, Washington State has gone 30-2 at its home tournament, the Cougar Challenge, with 11-straight wins dating back to 2017.  WSU has only dropped eight total sets in the Cougar Challenge in those 32 matches and has swept 28 teams since Greeny took over in 2011.

>> WSU has received votes in each of the first two AVCA top-25 coaches’ polls this season but has yet to crack list of nationally ranked DI teams in 2022.  The Cougars came in at No. 26 in the latest Rich Kern DI volleyball poll and 22nd in this week’s Pablo Rankings.

>> Washington State will play Cal Baptist for the first time on Thursday night.  The Cougs won the only all-time match against Belmont and is 2-0 all-time against CSU Bakersfield.

WSU Record Watch:

>> Pia Timmer is sixth all-time in kills/set at 3.23 over 278 sets played and holds the third-highest mark since sets were shortened to the 25-point scoring system that was implemented in 2008.

>> Magda Jehlarova is top-10 in all major career blocking categories at WSU including her 1.40 blocks/set which ranks second all-time.  Going into week two, Jehlarova is only one block…
