Two mountain climbers on separate missions take Nepal national team jersey and federation banner to the top of the world’s tallest mountain above sea level
- Experienced mountain climber, Ang Tshering Lama Angantyr, took the jersey of Nepal women’s national team player, Kamana Bista, to the top of the Everest
- Kamana said that seeing her jersey at the top of the Everest was “incredibly moving”
- Dawa Tshering (mountain climber and volleyball referee) embarked on a separate mission to the top of the mountain with the Nepal Volleyball Association banner
- Dawa hopes that taking a Nepal Volleyball Association banner to the top of Mount Everest will encourage young volleyball players in Nepal to realise their full potential
Ang Tshering Lama Angantyr, has climbed the tallest mountain in the world, Mount Everest, several times but his latest expedition was a special one for volleyball! Not least because the veteran mountain climber took volleyball to the highest point in the world, an altitude of 8,849 metres above sea level.
Following discussions with Nepal’s women’s national team player, Kamana Bista, Ang took Kamana’s jersey with him on his expedition up Everest.
“We get many requests like that; people ask us to take their banners or names to the top of Everest. I haven’t taken a player’s jersey before but I have taken other banners. This was the first time taking a player’s jersey,” Ang told FIVB.
Kamana, who has played volleyball from a young age, said that seeing her jersey at the top of Everest was “incredibly moving”.
“It was a moment of immense pride and joy. It felt surreal to see something so personal to me, my jersey, at the highest point on earth. Known for his adventurous spirit and deep connection to the mountains, Ang carried the jersey to the summit as a tribute to our shared passion for sports and adventure.
“This incredible feat not only showcased the jersey atop the world’s highest peak but also imbued it with the spirit of resilience and achievement that defines both volleyball and mountaineering. It symbolised not just a personal achievement but also a collective one for my team, my supporters, and everyone who believes in pushing boundaries,” said Kamana.
