SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College volleyball team swept their tri-match with wins over Manhattanville College and Curry College, 3-1 and 3-0, respectively in Saturday’s senior day win at Viniar Athletic Center.
Prior to the Curry match, Union recognized the seven members of the senior class: Nikki Newcomer, Denali Douglas, Sophia Estok, Keara Page, Meredith Blinn, Caroline Fraser, and Brooke Fleming.
First-year Sydney Scanlon dished out a career-high 38 assists in the first match against Manhattanville. Four players registered double-digit kills. First-year Graciela Escobar registered 13 kills on the day while sophomore Shannon McGrath tallied a double-double with 13 kills and 18 digs to hit .464 in the morning game. First-year Maddie McCarron continued her strong freshman campaign with 10 kills, five total blocks, three solo blocks, and two aces against the Valiants.
In the opening set, the Valiants went up 2-0, before Union went on a 4-0 run led by a pair of kills by Page. After back-and-forth points, Manhattan went up 9-6, and didn’t look back. A second 4-0 run put the visitors up 20-13. Union scored back-to-back points at set point, but fell 25-19 in the opening set.
Union jumped out to a 3-0 start in set two and held onto a lead throughout the set. The Valiants came within one, but Union led as many as five points in the set. A late push by Manhattanville saw the visitors close the gap 23-21, but back-to-back kills by McCarron and McGrath put away set two 25-21.
