COLUMBIA, Mo. – The University of Missouri volleyball team (4-3) swept (25-13, 25-15, 25-18) Kansas City (1-6) in the first match of the Mizzou Invitational Friday morning at the Hearnes Center.
Mizzou will continue its home-opening Mizzou Invitational, taking on UT Martin tonight (Friday) with first serve set to begin at 6:30 p.m., CT.
Graduate outside hitter Mychael Vernon took charge throughout the match with 11 kills and seven digs on a .524 hitting percentage.
Janet deMarrais chipped in eight kills and four digs while Colleen Finney followed with seven kills (.462) and three blocks.
Jordan Iliff (.600) and Morgan Isenberg (.714) both offered six kills to solidify the first win of the Mizzou Invitational.
Marina Crownover posted a career-best two aces along with 17 assists. Sierra Dudley notched 15 assists and two digs in the start.
Junior libero Maya Sands totaled 16 digs to lead the Tigers’ defense.
FIRST SET (25-13 Mizzou, Mizzou leads 1-0)
Mizzou kicked off the match with a strong 5-1 lead featuring kills by Iliff and Vernon.
Two aces by Regan Haith and Vernon advanced the lead to 7-2.
A 3-0 run forced a Kansas City timeout at 10-3. Kills by Iliff and Finney aided the run.
Kansas City responded, cutting the score to 11-7 with an ace and a pair of kills.
Sierra Dudley chimed in with a pair of assists to set up kills for Finney and Vernon pushing the lead to 13-7.
The Tigers then grew their advantage to 19-10.
