After three close sets, the Muhlenberg volleyball team ran away with the fourth set to post a 3-1 win against Ursinus.
The win was the second straight for the Mules (9-7, 2-2), who held the Bears (11-4, 1-2) to .084 hitting. The Mules, who lead the Centennial Conference in digs per set, are 9-1 when holding their opponents under .200 hitting.
Junior Alyssa Faville led the defense with 27 digs, while junior Julia Ficon recorded a season-high 13. Sophomore Catherine Maguire had 4 blocks.
On offense, sophomore Esmae Oehler (16) and junior Isabella Pontrelli (10) reached double figures in kills. Senior Emma Eglinton finished with 42 assists.
Muhlenberg trailed 9-5 early in the first set but came back to take an 11-9 lead behind the serving of senior Caleya Tereska. Later in the set, Tereska served during a 4-0 run that put the Mules ahead for good at 21-19. It was 24-23 when sophomore Rachel Jacobs put down a kill to finish off the set.
The Mules trailed by four again in the second set, at 17-13, but again rallied to win. Ursinus led 22-21 before Muhlenberg scored the next three points, and a kill by Pontrelli gave the Mules their second straight 25-23 win.
In the wild third set, Muhlenberg saved three set points, then had a set point of its own at 26-25 before the Bears scored three in a row to stay alive in the match.
The fourth set was playing as another tight one, with Muhlenberg clinging to an 18-16 lead. Then the Mules ran off seven straight points to suddenly end the match. Junior Christina Dalton recorded back-to-back kills during the run, and Maguire (pictured above) recorded a kill for the final point.
