Wildcats Fall in 3-0 Sweep at Michigan State


EAST LANSING, Mich. – Playing without a natural setter for the second straight match, the Northwestern volleyball team could not overcome Michigan State on Saturday falling on the road 3-0 (23-25, 16-25, 14-25) on Saturday night.

The loss dropped Northwestern’s record to 17-11 overall and 6-10 in Big Ten play, while the Spartans are 11-16 and 2-14 in conference.

Temi Thomas-Ailara finished with nine kills on the day to lead the Wildcats offense. Defensively, NU had two players reach double figures in digs as Ellee Stinson had 18 and Megan Miller had 12. From the front row, Leilani Dodson contributed five blocks.

» Charlotte Cronister notched an ace in the loss.

» Northwestern got a match-high 18 digs from Ellee Stinson.

» Northwestern attackers were helped by a team-high 18 assists from Grace Reininga, who is a defensive specialist filling in at setter.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Wildcats couldn’t endure a ferocious Michigan State rally in the first set, losing 25-23 after leading by eight points at 16-8 earlier in the set.

SET 2 | Northwestern then lost the second set 25-16 to fall behind in the match two sets to none. The Wildcats lost the first point and fought from behind the rest of the way before dropping the set.

SET 3 | Northwestern was not able to win the third set and was swept by Michigan State. The Wildcats fell in a tough set 25-14. Northwestern trailed by as many as 11 points.

Northwestern travels to face Indiana for the only meeting this year between the teams at 6 p.m .CT on Friday, Nov. 18.
