Wisconsin won the 2021 NCAA Division I Volleyball Championship after defeating Nebraska, 3-2, Saturday night at Nationwide Arena in Columbus.
The national title is the first for Wisconsin and head coach Kelly Sheffield. It’s the ninth time a Big Ten team has won the NCAA Volleyball Championship in the last 15 seasons.
Nebraska won the first set, 25-23, before Wisconsin took a hard-fought second set, 31-29. The Badgers took another close set in the third, 25-23. The Huskers won the fourth set, 25-23, before Wisconsin claimed the fifth set, 15-12.
The NCAA final was the second time two Big Ten squads squared off for the national title. Penn State defeated the Badgers in 2013 NCAA title match, 3-1, in the last NCAA title match that featured two Big Ten squads.
The Big Ten has had at least one team in 12 of the last 15 NCAA Volleyball Championship finals, the most of any conference. The Big Ten also led all conference with eight teams in this year’s NCAA Volleyball Tournament.
