WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University Athletics Department would like to recognize some of our women student-athlete alumni during Women’s History Month which has been observed annually in the month of March in the United States since 1987. Women’s History Month celebrates the contributions of women to United States history, culture and community.

Darriyan Thomas was a highly decorarted member of the Gallaudet women’s volleyball team for four seasons (2014-17). Thomas was a three-time all-conference first team selection and was named North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Player of the Year twice during the 2016 and 2017 seasons. Thomas was a three-time Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholar honoree, an AVCA All-American honorable mention and All-Region first team selection during the 2016 season. Thomas was selected as the 2016-17 Gallaudet Student-Athlete of the Year.

In My Own Words: Darriyan Thomas ’18 (Women’s Volleyball)

Where are you now?
I am currently living in Fremont, Calif., as a Physical Educator at California School for the Deaf-Fremont (CSD).

Your memory as a Gallaudet student-athlete
My favorite memory as a Gallaudet student-athlete is taking naps, dining together, and getting our mends set for play on the court and field while road tripping on the bus to different states for weekends. It was those glory days that I’ve missed the most today.

What is the importance of Women’s History Month and Title IX?
The significance of women’s history month is to honor all women and femmes everywhere because they are our role models and have made significant contributions to this world. I am always proud to be a cisgender woman; to embrace who I am, and to inspire future generations. Title IX is also a crucial part of our lives on a daily basis, particularly in sports, because it ensures that every woman and femme has an equal opportunity to participate in sports. I wouldn’t be able to participate in any of my favorite sports if it weren’t for it.
