THE ACTION
- Down 9-8 in the opening set, Saint Michael’s used a 5-0 run to create all the separation it would need in capturing the set, with Orth dropping two aces and Welch two kills in that time. Le Moyne drew within one point three times, including at 20-19, before Welch wrapped kills around another Orth ace during a 3-0 response. Van Winkle’s ace clinched the set.
- Patterson’s kill had the Purple Knights within 6-3 in the second set before the next eight points went to the Dolphins, who pulled away from there.
- Set No. 3 featured 16 ties and seven lead changes. Down 17-15, the Purple and Gold scored the next four points, with Welch tallying two kills, Syverson a block and senior Caroline Curley (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) an ace. Consecutive kills by Welch and Syverson broke another tie, making it 21-19, and Syverson’s kill had the visitors up 22-21. Le Moyne scored the next two points before Saint Michael’s forged a 23-23 tie on an error, but Dembroski’s kill put the Dolphins up for good, and first-year Kayla Anstett posted an ace for the final point.
