Women’s Volleyball Honors Class of 2023 on Saturday Afternoon

ELMIRA, N.Y. – The Elmira College Women’s Volleyball team honored the Class of 2023 on Saturday afternoon against the visiting Cardinals from St. John Fisher. On a day in which the Soaring Eagles honored Amelia Martin ’23, Gianna Pezzino ’23, Calli Vocke ’23, Delaney Johnson ’23, and Sydney Meyers ’23, the Purple & Gold fought through four sets but fell short, 3-1.
 
Maddie Boucher ’24 paced all players with 15 kills, while Vocke (5) and Martin (4) also paced the way. Asia Curkendall ’25 chipped in 24 assists on the afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Cardinals controlled the pace of play in the early-going, posting a first set hitting percentage of .364% compared to .143% for the Soaring Eagles. In the frame, the visitors jumped out to a 17-4 lead and didn’t look back, taking the frame 25-9 to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

 

From there, the good fortunes for the Cardinals continued, as they were able to take the second set 25-12 in which they amassed ten kills and two attacking errors compared to eight kills and eight errors for the Purple & Gold.

 

The Soaring Eagles turned the page in the third set, jumping out to a commanding 9-2 lead which forced the visitors into a timeout. From there, the Cardinals would make a run and eventually take a 22-20 lead before a service error, attacking error, and a kill from Martin put the Soaring Eagles ahead once again, 23-22.
