After a training tour of Vietnam, the Women’s Volleyroos are ready for the next challenge that lies ahead – Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Cup.
Set to get underway this weekend, the Australians will play their first match against Thailand on Monday 22, August at 6pm AEST.
Volleyroos Head Coach Russell Borgeaud said that the tour has prepared the team well for their return to international competition.
“The team is very excited now to go into the first international tournament for two and a half years,” Borgeaud said.
“The tour has been an excellent preparation, and we’ve been able to play against good teams who play the asian style of volleyball. This meant we had to adapt our game quite quickly and the team were able to do so.
“The tour taught us many things, but probably the most important lessons were how to play as a team and support each other in a positive manner.
“The group is an incredibly positive group of supportive people, from the athletes through to the volunteer staff.
“This support really does create a safe environment for players to express themselves with their skills, and challenge each other on and off the court,” he said.
Women’s Volleyroos player Stef Weiler said the tour has been great practice for what lies ahead.
“We all feel so fortunate to have gone on this Vietnam tour. The physical preparation has been essential to adapt to the heat and style of play in Asia,” Weiler said.
“Already in a short week, our team has improved tremendously. This time has also been critical to gel as a team leading into Asian Cup.
“We have all had so much fun. Before the trip we were all great individual players, but it truly feels like we will now leave for the Philippines as a great team,” she said.
