#15 Lewis Men's Volleyball Holds Off #9 BYU Saturday


ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The No. 15 Lewis University men’s volleyball team was able to hold off BYU after winning the first two sets, the Cougars responded with the next two but the Flyers won the fifth and the match, 3-2, Saturday (Jan. 13).

SET BREAKDOWN

Set 1: Lewis 25, BYU 16

Both teams went back-and-forth before Lewis scored three straight capped off by a block from Sack and Prayer to make it 6-4. BYU looked to come back late in the match as the Flyers led 14-12 midway through the set.

Lewis went on a 6-0 rally after a pair of aces from Morgan and kills from Haber and Prayer. The Cougars cut it down to 22-16 Lewis before the Flyers scored three straight points after an ace from Morgan and a kill by Prayer.

Set 2: Lewis 25, BYU 23

Lewis jumped out to an early 7-3 lead after a kill from Haber. The Flyers led for the entire match but there was a tie late. 

The Flyers extended the lead out to 19-10 after a block from Sack and Haber. BYU looked to come back after making it 21-18 Lewis then moments later tied it at 23-all.

Lewis was able to hold off BYU and won the next two points including an ace from Roquet which won it 25-23.

Set 3: BYU 25, Lewis 16

Lewis led 3-2 early in the third set after a kill from Sack. BYU responded with four straight points to make it 6-3.

Moments later, Piotr Wymoczyl (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove HS) recorded a kill to make it 7-6 Cougars before BYU rallied for four straight points which gave them a 11-6 lead. Back-to-back kills from Haber and Prayer made it 17-13 in favor of BYU.

Lewis looked to come back but the Cougars were steps ahead and won the set 25-16.

Set 4: BYU 25, Lewis 11

The fourth set was all BYU after Lewis started out the set with an ace from Prayer. The Cougars went on to score 10 unanswered points to grab a 10-1 lead. 

Tyler Simpson (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) looked to start a rally for the Flyers after recording a kill but the Cougars responded with three more. BYU led 19-6 before back-to-back kills…
