Laurinburg, N.C.- The volleyball team played their final road game of the season on Saturday. The team traveled to Laurinburg, N.C., to take on the St. Andrews University Lady Knights, an opponent from the Appalachian Athletic Conference.
A block assist by Ariana Smith and Olivia Bolin helped the team tie the score 1-1 in the first set. The score remained close through the next few points with a St. Andrews error giving the Lady Bulldogs a 4-3 lead. The opponents changed the tide though, scoring eight straight points to lead 11-4. Kills by Smith, Haylie Peoples, Gabby Harris, Marjorie Smith, and Jenna Huppert were not enough to bring the team back, falling in the first set 25-18.
St. Andrews scored the first five points of the second set, and 11 of the first 15 points to lead 11-4. Unlike the first set though, TWU battled back to tie the score 11-11 on an M. Smith service ace. A kill by A. Smith along with a kill by Aly Grace Lemons helped the team move ahead 14-13 as the team looked to take the second set. A few moments later, the set saw a 19-19 tie. The tie was broken by six consecutive points by St. Andrews who won the second set 25-19 to take a 2-0 lead.
The Lady Bulldogs went ahead by a comfortable margin in the third set. Kills by M. Smith and A. Smith along with Lemons and Harris kills helped the team lead 12-6. The offense continued to flow for Tennessee Wesleyan, turning their lead into a 21-12 advantage after a St. Andrews error. Two service aces by Jayda Perry helped the team win the third set 25-16.
Five of the first seven points were scored by the Lady Bulldogs to open the fourth set. The lead did not last though as the Lady Knights came back to tie the score 7-7, setting in motion a close set that saw five more ties.
