Cortland Sweeps St. Lawrence to Begin Red Dragon Classic

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women’s volleyball team opened its season with a 25-11, 25-15, 25-7 victory over visiting St. Lawrence during Day 1 of the Cortland Red Dragon Classic.
 
Cortland will continue play in the five-team, predetermined tournament with matches Saturday versus Western New England at noon and Hartwick at 5 p.m.
 
Graduate student Zoe Staats (Buchanan/Hendrick Hudson) and junior Allie Sturgess (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) led Cortland in their Red Dragon debuts. Staats finished with 12 kills and just one error in 22 attempts for a .500 attack percentage and Sturgess had eight kills, two aces and five digs.
 
Olivia Doorley (Pearl River) finished the match with six kills and no errors in 11 attempts for a .545 attack percentage and led the team with eight digs. Anna Pilkey (Ballston Spa) registered five kills and no errors in seven attempts for a .714 attack percentage. Meadow Wittman (Colden/Springville Griffith Institute) dished out 19 assists, Megan McMahon (Ballston Spa) added eight assists, and Jennifer Koestner (Syosset) served five aces, all in the third set.
 
Julia Girous had eight kills and Lainey Roman added seven kills for St. Lawrence, which also was playing its season opener. Lily Snide totaled 19 assists.
