Team Red Wins Volleyball’s Red-Blue Scrimmage


TUCSON, Ariz. – The Red team won volleyball’s annual Red-Blue Scrimmage 3-1 on Saturday afternoon. Six Wildcats had 10 or more kills in the scrimmage.
 
Zyonna Fellows led both teams with 18 kills and seven blocks. Sofia Maldonado Diaz was second with 16 kills. Ana Heath had 37 assists and four service aces and Joy Galles followed with three aces.
 
Set 1
Team Blue won the first set 25-22. Maldonado Diaz tallied eight kills for Team Blue and Dilara Gedikoglu led Team Red with five kills in the first set. Alayna Johnson had two block assists to push Team Blue to the first-set win.
 
Set 2
Team Red evened the match when they won Set 2. Johnson led the way for the Team Red with six kills followed by Jaelyn Hodge with five kills. Despite Team Blue serving three aces to Team Red’s one ace, Team Red won 26-24.
 
Set 3
In the second set to go to extra points, Team Red won 28-26 to take a one-set lead over Team Blue. Although Fellows and Maldonado Diaz combined to score 16 points for Team Blue, Gedikoglu and Nicole Briggs pushed Team Red past Team Blue with four kills each.  
 
Set 4
The fourth set went to Team Red to end the scrimmage. Fellows and Hodge each had three kills and Briggs and Heath recorded two kills each for Team Red. Fellows and Maldonado Diaz both had two blocks to help Team Red win 25-18.
 
The Red-Blue match was the first chance for fans to see the 2022 squad in action before the season-opener next weekend, Aug. 26-27 when Arizona hosts the Cactus Classic.
