COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 8 Ohio State Buckeyes (0-3) fell to No. 15 San Diego (4-1) on Saturday to open the Cardinal Classic in Louisville, Ky.
A back-and-forth first set went to San Diego by a 25-22 margin. The Toreros used three-consecutive points at the end of the second set to win 26-24 after tying the set at 23 and 24 following timeouts. San Diego used the fuel from an overturned challenge to win the third set in extra points, 28-26.
How it Happened
Emily Londot began the match with a kill. Neither team scored more than three consecutive points at the beginning of the set as the teams were tied eight times by the time they were knotted at 10. A Londot ace gave Ohio State a 12-10 lead and the Buckeyes held the 15-13 advantage at the media timeout. San Diego used a 4-0 run to take a 17-16 lead, its first since 8-7. A 9-2 run gave SD the 22-18 advantage to force another Buckeye timeout. Ohio State got within two at 24-22, but a San Diego kill ended the set.
The Toreros scored first in the second set. San Diego did not score more than one unanswered point until back-to-back scores tied the set at nine. Ohio State went on a 3-0 run to take a 13-10 lead, but San Diego matched the three-point run to tie the set at 13. Londot’s ninth kill of the match sent the Buckeyes into the media timeout with a narrow 15-14 lead. San Diego used three unanswered points to take the lead back at 17-15. The teams traded points with neither team scoring back-to-back until two points by the Buckeyes tied the set at 22, forcing a San Diego timeout. An Adria Powell kill out of the timeout immediately prompted another Toreros timeout. SD tied the set at 23 and then again at 24, using a 3-0 run to take the set by a 26-24 margin.
San Diego led off the third set with a kill, while Ohio State took its first lead of the set at 5-4. The teams were tied at every point until kills from Londot and Gabby Gonzales gave Ohio State a 14-12 lead. The Buckeyes extended their run to 5-0 to force a Toreros timeout leading 17-12. OSU led by as many as 19-14 before three-consecutive Toreros’ points forced a Buckeye timeout at 19-17. San Diego got to within one, but Rylee Rader and Londot answered with back-to-back kills to give OSU a 22-19 lead, prompting a SD timeout.
