SAN DIEGO, CA — Maryland won its first of three games in the Aztec Classic, besting host San Diego State 3-1 (25-14, 21-25, 25-20, 25-18).
The Terps (5-2) jumped to a 5-0 lead in the first set and took off from there. Sam Csire and Laila Ivey combined for 11 kills.
The second set was a back-and-forth battle with the Terps displaying lots of fight, but the Aztecs (2-5) came out on top 25-21.
The two teams were locked in another close battle during the third set. The Terps went down 19-20, but finished the set on a 6-0 run thanks to a pair of kills by Ivey and multiple Aztec errors.
Maryland took the final set behind a relentless offensive attack led by Csire, Ivey and Laila Ricks.
Csire led the team with a season-high 17 total kills. Anastasia Russ continued her defensive prowess with seven blocks, tying her season-high. The Terps recorded 11 blocks total.
