Red Dragons Fall in Four Sets to Unbeaten Springfield

HAVERFORD, PA. – The Cortland women’s volleyball team dropped a four-set decision to Springfield College during the opening night of the Haverford College Ford Invitational. The Pride won the first set, 25-20, before Cortland claimed the second, 25-20. Springfield won the final two sets, each by 25-18 scores.
 
The Red Dragons (3-1) continue tournament action Saturday versus Susquehanna at 11 a.m. and Haverford at 2 p.m. The tournament features four teams that all advanced to at least the second round of last year’s NCAA Division III tournament.
 
Zoe Staats (Buchanan/Hendrick Hudson) led Cortland with 11 kills. She finished with a .310 attack percentage. Allie Sturgess (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) had 10 kills and just one error in 26 attempts for a .346 attack percentage and also led the team with 20 digs.
 
Emma Reilly (Massapequa Park) finished with eight kills and one error in just 13 attacks for a .538 attack percentage. Anna Pilkey (Ballston Spa), Alexa Guedez (Rye/Rye Neck) and Olivia Doorley (Pearl River) added six kills each, with Guedez posting a team-high six blocks, and Meadow Wittman (Colden/Springville Griffith Institute) led the Red Dragons with 22 assists.
 
Springfield (4-0) was led by Riley Donahue’s 19 kills, three aces and three blocks. Elsie Phillips has 12 kills and Megan Kirtyan finished with 38 assists and three aces.
 
Cortland actually posted similar attack numbers to Springfield as a team, finishing with a .197 attack percentage (48 kills, 17 errors in 157 attempts) compared to the Pride’s .181 mark (49 kills, 20 errors in 160 attempts). The Red Dragons also finished…
