UCLA Closes Non-Conference with Loss to No. 8 San Diego

SAN DIEGO – The UCLA women’s volleyball team closed its non-conference slate with a loss in straight sets (22-25, 18-25, 17-25) to No. 8 San Diego at Jenny Craig Pavilion on Friday night.
 
Middle blocker Francesca Alupei and Grayce Olson led the scoring for the Bruins (6-3) with 9.5 points apiece. Alupei followed up her career-high 11 kills against San Diego State the night before with another efficient outing, this time collecting seven kills at a .313 clip. Olson, élan McCall and Iman Ndiaye each tallied eight kills.
 
Defensively, Alupei had three block assists, boosting her team-lead in total blocks to 47.0 on the season.
 
Matti McKissock had a team-high 29 assists while Mackenzie Cole led the Bruins with 15 digs.
 
San Diego’s (8-1) Katie Lukes and Grace Frohling were the lone attackers in the match to reach double-digit kills and points. Luke recorded a match-high 17 kills at .412 while Frohling added 11 at .360. Lukes was one dig shy of a double-double.
 
Up Next: The Bruins face rival USC in their home opener on Thursday, Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. PT. UCLA was an undefeated 12-0 at home last season and defeated the Trojans in the 2021 home opener, 3-1.
