Volleyball Falls to Arkansas, Abby Marjama Moves into UA Top 10 in Aces

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Alabama fifth-year senior Abby Marjama moved into the single-season and career top 10 rankings in service aces in Sunday’s match against Arkansas, as the Crimson Tide fell to the Razorbacks in three sets by scores of 18-25, 16-25 and 27-29.

Needing three aces heading into Sunday’s match between Alabama (9-19, 3-13 SEC) and Arkansas (17-8, 8-7 SEC), Abby Marjama finished the match with that number to move into the single-season and career top 10 at UA. Marjama has 66 aces this season, tying for 10th place with Nancy Woolsey (1979) and Erin Price (2002). The 66 aces are the most in a season for any Tide player since Mary Catherine Aune’s 67 during the 2007 season. Marjama also ties Jennifer Bibber’s (2000-03) career mark of 126 and is now just one shy of ninth-place Kryssi Daniels (2012-15). The 126 only reflects Marjama’s total at Alabama, as she has accumulated 202 including her two seasons at UC Irvine.

The teams traded back and forth early in the first, tied six times when it reached 6-6 before Arkansas started to pull away, holding a four-point lead at the media timeout. Alabama took a timeout trailing 20-15 and down by the same margin later at 23-18 the Razorbacks scored back-to-back to close out the set at 25-18. Arkansas started the second set on a 4-1 run, but Alabama quickly fought back to take an 8-7 lead. With the Tide ahead 11-10, the Razorbacks rattled off four unanswered and Alabama looked to stop the momentum with a timeout. The Tide took its second timeout down 20-15 and Arkansas would hold on to win the set, 25-16.

Alabama got off to a hot start in the third set, pulling ahead 10-5 before Arkansas had to call an early timeout. The lead swung back in the home team’s favor as the Razorbacks went on an 8-0 run to pull ahead 13-11. After a timeout down 17-12, the Tide surged back with a 6-1 to tie it at 18-18. Arkansas pulled ahead 22-19 but Alabama was the first to reach set point, 24-23, looking to extend the match. The teams would combine for four set points before the Razorbacks eventually closed it out, 29-27.
